Is it worth replacing old uPVC windows?

It depends on condition rather than age alone. Old PVCu windows are worth replacing if the glass has misted, seals leak, locks or hardware fail, or the frames are warped or cracked. If the frames are sound and only the glass has failed, replacing the sealed units can be enough.

What are the signs old windows should go?

  • Condensation or misting between the panes
  • Persistent draughts or water coming in
  • Handles, hinges or locks that no longer work
  • Cracked, warped or badly discoloured frames

What can be repaired instead?

Handles, hinges, gaskets and sealed units can be replaced individually, which often cures draughts and misting without new frames.

What would new windows give you?

Better insulation, as replacement windows must achieve a Uw of 1.4 W/m²K or better in England, tested locking and a fresh guarantee. See our PVCu windows. Phoenix Windows makes its PVCu windows in-house in Nuneaton and backs them with an insurance-backed 10-year guarantee through Assure.

Is it worth replacing just the glass?

If the frames are sound, new sealed units cost less than full replacement and cure misting. The catch is that old frames may not suit modern units and may still have weak locking.
