Do composite doors warp in the sun?

Composite doors can warp in strong sun, though a quality door rarely does. The cause is uneven expansion: the sun-facing skin heats well above the interior, and the slab bows. Dark colours on south or west-facing fronts are most exposed, while a reinforced core, a lighter shade and a canopy cut the risk.

What causes a composite door to bow in the heat?

The skin, core and frame each expand at their own rate. If one face is much hotter than the other, the difference pushes the slab out of shape, and the lock may then stop engaging smoothly.

When is warping most likely?

It is most likely with dark, sun-facing doors that have a weak core and no shade. Light colours reflect more heat, so they move less.

What protects a composite door against warping?

  • A steel-reinforced or timber core
  • A lighter colour on a sunny elevation
  • A porch or canopy for shade
  • A guarantee that covers warping
