Can I fit a composite door to a wooden frame?

A composite door can be fitted into a good timber frame, but fitting a complete new door set is generally the stronger choice. Old frames carry hidden rot and movement, and a door’s security and weather ratings apply to the tested set. A slab-only job suits a sound, square frame only.

What condition must a wooden frame be in?

  • No soft spots, rot or woodworm
  • Square, level and firmly fixed to the masonry
  • Deep enough rebate for the new door slab and seals
  • Strong enough to hold the lock keeps

What do you gain from a new frame?

A new frame removes the guesswork. It gives fresh weather seals, a proper threshold, tighter tolerances for the lock and a performance rating that covers the whole assembly.

Does a replacement door need certification?

Yes. In England an external door is a controlled fitting under the Building Regulations, so the work should be completed by a competent person scheme installer or approved by building control.

Phoenix Windows manufactures in-house in Nuneaton and is an approved Solidor installer, so it can supply a full set when a frame is not worth keeping with composite doors.
