Aluminium is better for slim sightlines, strength and a lifespan of around 30 to 45 years. PVCu is better for lower cost. Both meet Building Regulations when double glazed, so the choice comes down to appearance, budget and how large the glass needs to be.
Where does aluminium win?
- Slimmer frames and more glass for the same opening.
- Strong enough for large panes and wide spans.
- Does not warp, and the powder-coated finish resists fading.
Where does PVCu win?
PVCu usually costs less and has insulating chambers built into the profile, so it insulates well without extra components. Aluminium needs a thermal break to match it, and it typically adds a noticeable amount to the bill.
Do both meet the energy rules?
Yes. Replacement windows in England need a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or a Window Energy Rating of Band B, and both materials can achieve this.
