Do aluminium window frames cause condensation?

Not on modern thermally broken frames. Older aluminium frames without a thermal break can attract condensation because metal conducts cold to the inside surface. Condensation mainly comes from indoor humidity meeting a cold surface, so ventilation and a thermally broken, double-glazed system are the fix.

Why does aluminium attract condensation?

Aluminium conducts heat, so an unbroken frame gets cold inside. Warm, moist indoor air cools on that surface and forms droplets.

How does a thermal break help?

A thermal break is an insulating strip between the inner and outer frame, which keeps the inside surface warmer and reduces condensation risk.

What else reduces condensation?

  • Run extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Use trickle vents or background ventilation.
  • Specify warm-edge spacer bars in the double-glazed units.
  • Keep indoor humidity under control.

Does outside condensation matter?

Condensation on the outside of efficient double glazing on clear, cold mornings is normal and shows the glass is insulating well. Phoenix makes its windows in-house in Nuneaton and backs them with Assure. See our aluminium windows.
