Can you put a warm roof on a conservatory?

Yes, a glazed or polycarbonate conservatory roof can be replaced with an insulated solid roof, provided the frame and base carry the extra weight and Building Regulations approval is obtained. Cutting the glazing significantly generally ends the conservatory exemption from Building Regulations.

Can my existing conservatory take a solid roof?

Not always. A tiled or insulated roof weighs far more than glass or polycarbonate, so the frame, dwarf walls and foundations need checking, and steel reinforcement or an engineer’s input may be required. A survey shows what the structure can support.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually no, if the footprint and height stay within permitted development. A major change of appearance, such as swapping polycarbonate for solid tiles, may need it, and listed or designated-land properties have tighter rules.

What roof options are there?

  • Lightweight tiled or slate-effect systems
  • Insulated panel roofs
  • A solid perimeter with a central roof lantern
