The common problems with aluminium windows are condensation on poorly specified frames, scuffed or chalking finishes, failed seals, and fixing issues on low-grade systems. Modern thermally broken aluminium avoids most of these. Quality varies widely between systems, so the specification matters more than the metal.
What causes condensation on aluminium?
Older frames without a thermal break conduct cold to the inner surface. Thermally broken frames separate the inner and outer sections with an insulating barrier, and greatly reduce the risk.
What else goes wrong?
- Powder coating damage from harsh cleaners or poor application.
- Perished gaskets or failed double-glazing units, usually after 20 years or more.
- Worn hinges or handles on cheaper hardware.
- Water ingress through poorly sealed corner joints.
How do you avoid these problems?
Choose a thermally broken system, a quality powder-coat finish and tested hardware, and use an installer who seals and fits correctly.
